Artists Talk: Katherine Jones will be talking about her work the Pond Gallery at 1pm on Saturday 7th October.

Katherine Jones is a fine art printmaker and painter living and working in Brixton South London. Her delicate and haunting visions focus on the tension between safety and danger, security and vulnerability. House like structures set in bleak landscape are as fallible and unreliable as they are dependable and secure.

She combines traditional forms of etching, collagraph and block-print to produce her distinctive images. The process of making the prints begins with numerous small maquettes and also sketches in watercolour made in order to work out starting points before moving on to larger, more laborious work. Katherine uses a cardboard or metal base which is then inked and printed through an etching press onto paper. “I start off with a solid idea but struggle to keep that idea going. After a while, you have to trust the image and give up trying to hold on to it and let it go on its own. I normally draw a lot, draw onto the plates directly and each print goes through masses of stages. I work like a painter, in layers, and there may be 20 proofs before the image feels right.

Katherine Jones exhibits extensively in the UK and overseas, including frequently at the RA Summer Show and is the winner of many awards and residencies. Her work is held in public collections worldwide including the V&A prints and drawings collection, The Ashmolean, the House of Lords, Yale University Library, US.
