Warlight is partly set in Suffolk's mysterious Saints area, it is, like his Booker Prize-winning novel The English Patient, a haunting story of love, secrets and betrayal with a Second World War setting. Narrated by Nathaniel, a 14-year-old in 1945, when “our parents went away and left us in the care of two men who may have been criminals”.

Ondaatje was born in Sri Lanka and moved to Canada in 1962. He is the author of a memoir, several collections of poetry and novels including The Cat's Cradle and Anil's Ghost. Anthony Minghella directed the Academy Award-winning film of The English Patient, starring Ralph Fiennes, Juliette Binoche and Kristen Scott Thomas.
