Join us for a night of non-stop music and dancing with Mônica Vasconcelos and The London Bossa Collective, followed by Son Yambu and special guest Osvaldo Chacón.

Cabaret- style set up (some seating, with room for dancing) plus a bar and Latin American food available.

Mônica Vasconcelos brings her trademark joyful, jazz infused blend of gorgeous Brazilian classics and originals to FlipSide alongside the London Bossa Collective, a band comprised of some of the finest exponents of Brazilian music.

Over the past two decades London based singer, songwriter and broadcaster Monica Vasconcelos has been celebrating in the UK the music of her native country, Brazil. She's recorded seven albums and is about to release the 8th one -  The São Paulo Tapes - which comes with production credits to no less than the great Robert Wyatt.

She's also been heard on BBC Radio 4 and BBC World Service presenting the powerful and inspiring documentaries Tropicalia: Revolution in Sound (featuring her interview with Caetano Veloso) and Losing My Sight and Learning to Swim (where she can be heard talking to the late Dr. Oliver Sacks about life and sight loss).

Monica delights in assembling brilliant, multinational line ups  and with her, each gig is a concoction of great songs, great musicianship, warmth and togetherness. A bit like Brazil, perhaps?

'Monica is like a curator of Brazilian music, rediscovering her compatriots' sound and reinterpreting it in a coolly individual way' (Guardian);

'Vasconcelos leaves us in no doubt that she is one of the most sophisticated Brazilian artists to have made the UK's shores her home' (Songlines).

Son Yambu's set will now feature award-winning Cuban singer songwriter: Osvaldo Chacón

Son Yambu play authentic 'Son Cubano' or Cuban son - the essential Afro-Cuban music that originated in the streets of eastern Cuba at the turn of the last century.  Son is a fusion of Spanish and African rhythms and is the root of all salsa music.  Formed in 2011, Son Yambu features a new generation of musicians who are all passionate about maintaining the traditions of the genre, continuing the Buena Vista legacy that put Cuban music back on the map in 1997.

Since their debut album 'La Maravilla' was released to rave reviews (**** Songlines, The Evening Standard) at the end of 2012, Son Yambu have gone from strength to strength.

Highlights since then have included playing at the world famous Glastonbury Festival, The Manchester Jazz Festival, The Cheltenham Music Festival, The Shetland Folk Festival, The Africa Oyé Festival , The Cork Jazz Festival,  The Edinburgh Mela, The Rainforest World Music Festival in Borneo -  to name but a few!

With a hugely successful Arts Council Tour of England in 2016, a recent live session for Sean Rafferty on BBC Radio 3 ‘In Tune’ and a new album currently being recorded, the future looks bright indeed.

'Most of the band members hail from Santiago De Cuba, the birthplace of Cuban son…. and have the effortless musicianship that comes from being to the manor born…..a set infused with rhythm changes and infectious melodies and grooves.  Son Yambu is the best band playing Cuban son.' Jane Cornwell.  Songlines April/May 2013.

Osvaldo Chacón began his musical career with some of Cuba's top salsa bands, including 'Paulito FG' and 'El Medico de la Salsa' (with whom he featured on the CD Una Aventura Loca). In 1995 he joined 'Bamboleo' as lead male singer (alongside the charismatic female duo of Haila and Vannia) and featured on their seminal CD Te Gusto o te caigo bien (You like me, fancy me), released in 1996 on the American label Ahí-Namá, for which he also wrote some of the songs including the title track. The track went on to win Chacón a prize for "best debut work" in Cuba's influential annual music industry awards Cubadisco 98. Chacón also featured in the performance of the longest son ever played in the world (as registered in the Guinness Book of Records, being part of the 1997 line-up of Cuba's leading popular orchestras at Havana's famous Salon Rosado de la Tropicale).
